Rooney impressed by Salgaocar

Australian striker Sean Rooney has been impressed with new club Salgaocar FC, hailing the Indian outfit s professionalism.

Having joined the Goan side in August, former Newcastle Jets forward Rooney believes that Salgaocar have the right mindset to challenge for top honours in the I-League.

It s been a great experience so far. They are thoroughly professional, have got a good management, good infrastructure, a good squad and they ve taken care of me, Rooney told Goal.com.

I expect us to win trophies this season. We ve had a good pre-season and will be playing in the Federation Cup soon. So I expect us to pick up silverware. I am raring to go and score as many goals to help the team win.

On being asked as to what prompted him to join the two-time I-League champions, Rooney spoke of his desire to experience a new challenge.

I was back at my hometown when the offer to play in India came my way. I decided to sign up as it s a new place and it would be a new experience, hopefully a great one, Rooney said.

The 23-year-old was at the Jets from 2008 to 2011, but made just 29 appearances and scored three goals before his release.

He spent the 2011/12 Indonesian Super League season with Deltras FC, and also spent time at hometown club Blacktown City Demons in the New South Wales Premier League before signing with Salgaocar.

When I played in the A-League for some time, I had to contend with injuries, Rooney said.

I had a bad experience in Indonesia with the club (Deltras FC) as they had problems regarding payments.

Former A-League Player of the Year and Melbourne Victory star Carlos Hernandez has joined Salgaocar s rivals Prayag United this season and Rooney praised the Costa Rican attacker s abilities.

I played against him during my time at Newcastle Jets. He was a good player then and Prayag have a decent signing on their hands, Rooney said of the 30-year-old.
